For five years, yes, I worked there. It was fine. Well, fine, yes. Just fine. Well, you might be interested to know – did you know? – it was near here, a place called Western Supermare. Have we taken you there yet? This is it, here. No? Perhaps you were too young to remember. Well. That’s where I grew up. Anyways. I was very very young back then, my hair was not white would you believe it, and I could walk much farther than I do now. It was forty minutes to get from our flat to where I worked. Sometimes longer if it was raining. The streets near the ocean flooded more. They built a concrete wall now. Which is good, because – you know? – it was pretty dangerous back then.
Anyways. I do get my one thousand steps in. Yes, here, have I shown you this? This is my FitBit. Well, yes, it’s quite handy for keeping track, you know? When you get like me (old), you just don’t remember these things quite as well as you once did. So. Anyways. What I was trying to say, was that I had to do lots of walking back then which now my knees would not be happy about at all. Lots of writing too. It was all Pig Latin, which I don’t think anyone uses now? You probably type it all fast enough on your computers today. But here, let me show you, one second. I’ll get a piece of paper. It looked like this. That’s a whole note. Yes, that’s one word. “Hello.” So I could write very quickly all the things the headmaster wanted written down.
I worked there for five years, two headmasters in that time. You know, thinking back to it, I do not even really recall what they had me write about. It was so long ago, really. Hmm. Probably various notes, letters to parents, oh yes, and meeting notes. Say, someone came in to visit the school or discuss stuff. I wrote the notes for that meeting. That was not all, of course, because then I would take those notes – in a little pile – and then have to type them up or write them out by hand. If it was a letter, I’d also walk to the post office to send it off. Lots of walking back then. It was not enjoyable work, I would say, but it kept me busy. Anyways.
Yes, I mean if you think about it, we lived in Western Supermare and your grandfather was bringing in most of the money. We sat down one day after his graduation. We had a huge list of jobs that we had collected. We ordered them all by salary and then picked the highest one. So he became an accountant. I only worked another year after that. Or perhaps it was two? Anyways, it does not matter because then I had Will and – well – someone had to be home to look after him. That’s just how it was in those days. Hmm. Anyways.
What else. I’m just having a think. Ah, yes, we did not live in a very nice flat. Nothing like this house now. It was, about, hmm, as big as, oh, half of this kitchen. That was all. Your grandfather was not well off and neither was I. If it were not for his smarts, well, this house is all because of him. So.
That’s all there is really. I do have very fond memories of Western Supermare. I grew up as a child there, and my parents – your great grandmother – she was from there. It’s such a lovely place, but it’s not for us now. Honestly. You know? I’ve been with him as long as I can remember. If your grandfather ever, I mean I don’t like to talk about it really, but if he, you know. Well. I would walk up to those red cliffs and I would jump right off. Hmm. Anyways.
